Image Converter: PNG, JPG and WebP

Pick a target format and convert one image or a whole batch. Transparent images converted to JPG are placed on a background colour you choose, so you never end up with unexpected black areas.

*AVIF and HEIC can only be opened if your browser supports them. Saving as AVIF or HEIC is not possible in browsers.

How to use the Image Converter

  1. Add your images. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, SVG and (where your browser can open it) AVIF are accepted.
  2. Choose the output format: JPG, PNG or WebP. Set the quality for JPG and WebP.
  3. For JPG, choose the background that replaces transparency (white by default).
  4. Convert, then download each file or a ZIP.

Tips for better results

  • Use PNG when you need transparency or crisp text, JPG for photos that must work everywhere, and WebP for the smallest files on modern websites.
  • SVG files are drawn at their declared size, or 1024 px wide if none is declared. Convert at the size you need, because a raster copy cannot be scaled up cleanly.
  • Converting a JPG to PNG does not restore quality that JPG already discarded; it only makes a larger lossless copy.

Limitations you should know about

  • Output formats are JPG, PNG and WebP. Browsers cannot create AVIF or HEIC files from a canvas, so those are input-only (and only if your browser can open them).
  • HEIC/HEIF photos from iPhones open only in browsers that support them, such as Safari. In others, change the camera setting to “Most Compatible” or export as JPG from the Photos app.
  • Animated GIFs convert to a single still image (the first frame).

Frequently asked questions

Why is my converted JPG white where the PNG was transparent?

JPG cannot store transparency, so the transparent area has to be filled with a colour. White is the default; change it in the options if your page has a different background.

Is WebP better than JPG?

WebP files are typically smaller at similar visual quality and are supported by all current major browsers, but JPG is still the safest choice for email and older software.

Does conversion change the dimensions?

No. The pixel size stays the same. Use the Image Resizer if you also need a different size.
